Herts players in action at Wimbledon
A number of our Herts players were playing at Wimbledon during the first week of the Championships.
Oliver Tarvet from St Albans qualified for the 2nd time in a row this year – he is only the 3rd Brit to qualify in back to back years in the open era. Playing against Arthur Rinderknech in the First Round, Oliver battled hard in a 4 set match but unfortunately was unsuccessful in the end. The score was 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.
Also playing in the First Round this time in the Men’s Doubles was Hertfordshire’s David Stevenson with his partner Marcus Willis. The pair beat Ariel Behar and Joe Salisbury 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the Second Round. They then played against the pairing of Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic. David and Marcus gave their all especially in an exciting 2nd set tie break but ultimately were unable to go further. The final score was 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
David could also be seen playing First Round Mixed Doubles with partner Jodie Burrage. Their opponents were number 1 seeds Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani. Sadly they were beaten 6-4, 6-1 and were unable to progress any further in the competition.
We’d like to say a huge well done to both Oliver and David and we hope to see more of you playing at Wimbledon in the future.
Last but by no means least, we were excited to see Rhys beat his opponent Michael Antonius in the First Round of the Boys’ Singles yesterday, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. Rhys will now be playing Flynn Thomas in the Second Round. Rhys will be on court again today playing in the Boys’ Doubles First Round with partner Jordan Lee. We wish him the best of luck for his match today and also for his upcoming Second Round singles match.
Special mention also goes to Herts player Jo Garland who played in the qualifying event making it to Round 2. We hope to see you playing in the championships in the future.
